Spring & autumn on the Ubaye
April, May, June. September, October. The Ubaye is not on pause — it's just wilder, more available, more real. Fewer people, water levels that change everything compared to summer, and rates that reward those who choose to come outside the peak season.
From the first spring warmth (April–June depending on the year), the Ubaye is fed by snowmelt. Flow rates sometimes ten times higher than summer. The river is more powerful, faster, wider — high-volume paddling, big waves, deep troughs.
Spring is not reserved for experienced paddlers : high levels open up the entire river, including easy sections that are less interesting in July–August.
- Cold meltwater — wetsuit provided
- High flow, high-volume paddling
- Full river stretch accessible
- Smaller groups — personalised guidance
September and October, the Ubaye catches its breath. Low to moderate flows, more technical and manoeuvrable paddling. The Southern Alps often enjoy an Indian summer — sunny days, crisp air, and the October larches put on a show that few Alpine valleys can match.
The valley finds its peace again. Those who come in autumn do so by choice — and it's often the guides' favourite time to take small groups along the river.
- Runoff-warmed water
- Technical, manoeuvrable paddling
- Golden landscapes — larches in autumn colours
- Intimate atmosphere, guides available
"In October, we paddle light, we take the time to watch the larches turn gold.
Another river — the same Ubaye, discovered under different light."
